THE SMERALDA FOOD PROFILE

SFYS is a company specializing in the food business and beverage, supplying Yachts and Mega Yachts throughout Sardinia, Corsica, the Mediterranean and beyond. SFYS has been provisioning yachts since 1993 under the supervision of Vito, who comes from a family background of fishermen.
In the 1990s Vito worked as a fishing expert for the Ministry of Merchant Navy, and as fish technician counsellor for the European Economic Community, in Fishing & Aquaculture – Fish Department, Cooperation and Development. As a consultant for both hand-crafted and industrial fishing, during the winter he worked as a fishing technician within Italian and European Cooperation Projects in developing countries (Asia and Africa), while throughout the summer he fished on the Costa Smeralda sea, selling the seafood to the yachts in Porto Cervo and Cala di Volpe.
Thus, Vito started to seal a trustful relationship with the yacht captains and chefs, who began to ask him to look for general grocery items. At that time there were not supply agencies in Porto Cervo and there were just two small supermarkets, therefore, chefs in an attempt to overcome the shortage of supplies, asked Vito to supply them with fruit and vegetables, meat and general grocery items in addition to fish.
As a result, Vito decided to hire someone to buy fruit and vegetables and general grocery items and deliver them directly to the yachts. In 1996 he purchased two refrigerated delivery vans, one for fish and the other for fruit and vegetables and general grocery items; customers became numerous and demanding, and they started to ask for food delivery also in other Sardinian and Corsica ports.
In 2000, Vito quit fishing with his fishing boat because the fish were not longer enough to satisfy all his customers. He provided technical support to his fishermen-colleagues, and suggested innovative fishing material to catch the quality fish asked for their customers, such as lobsters, langoustes, red prawns, langoustines, seabass, red snapper, etc..
In 2002 he also quit his job with the Italian Government and the European Community, as he was busy building a storage facility in S.Teresina (7 Km from Porto Cervo). In 2003 he established the Smeralda Food Yacht Service. He purchased two more delivery vans and a tender, carefully selected his partners and taught them how to buy and choose fresh products and how to clean and fillet fish. He organized a quick delivery net by tender in Cala di Volpe and by vans in all the Sardinian ports.
In 2005 with his daughter Roberta he set up a supply system for a wide service, ranging from port bookings for yachts to car or helicopter rental. Vito never left the fish business, continuing to buy fish at auctions in the most important Sardinian fishermen cooperatives.
